Secret Charter is a fundraiser with a difference, an original and star-studded art sale to raise much needed funds for the arts at The Charter School North Dulwich. It has attracted the support of a vast art community from near and far, united against the current education policy that sidelines the arts, and supporting the values and knowledge an art education can bring to children. The exhibition will take place at the Dulwich Picture Gallery (our venue partners) on Monday 15th October.
Secret Charter offers the chance to acquire an original postcard-sized work of art produced specially for us by international and local artists, illustrators, designers, celebrities and art students. Just £40 buys you a Postcard Voucher which will be randomly matched to a piece of artwork in the sale - a lucky dip.
Tracey Emin, Antony Gormley, Julian Opie and Gary Hume are just some of the big art names taking part, while celebrity contributors span the spectrum from Jeremy Corbyn MP, actor Hugh Grant to TV presenter James Corden. Young art students from the school will sit alongside some of the most celebrated names in contemporary culture.
A representative selection of the artworks will be previewed online for the two weeks leading up to the Secret Charter exhibition. Actor James Nesbitt will be hosting the event.
Alongside the main exhibition of postcards at Dulwich Picture Gallery, there will also be a display of the beautiful artworks by named artists taking part in our online auction.
Like schools right across the country, The Charter School North Dulwich faces funding cuts, losing up to half a million pounds from its budget over the next few years. All proceeds from the sale will be donated to the school to support the Arts to ensure that children, from all backgrounds, continue to have access to the fantastic arts education they currently receive. Over 100 leading artists, including many contributing to this sale, have signed an open letter published in The Guardian newspaper criticising the marginalisation of the arts in the new curriculum.
The Dulwich Picture Gallery is a vibrant cultural hub, hosting some of the UK’s leading exhibitions alongside a wide-ranging programme of public and community events. It is opening its doors especially for the Secret Charter event.
